A very interesting movie with the wellknown blake and mortimer , clear jacobs-shaped pictures with a lifefull storyboard :, the best adventure since jacobs'death!
One of the later books by Blake and Mortimer (originally released in French in 2000 by the team of Yves Sente and Andre Juilliard), is pleasant and entertaining, though it does not reach the level of the classic volumes by E.P. Jacobs. Our heroes this time has to stop their nemesis Olrik along with an evil Soviet scientist (the Voronov of the title) from using a lethal virus that was launched in a Soviet rocket to kill the world's most prominent leaders. The artwork by Sente is fine; is the plot written by Juilliard than I find a bit wanting.Set right before the launching of Sputnik in 1957 (a rare instance where a Blake and Mortimer volume is dated), it lacks the fantastic element of previous Blake and Mortimer volumes and at the same time has some unbelievable twists: for example, in one case, Blake is able to get inside the Lubianka using a fake moustache in order to rescue a prisoner (a homage to Tintin in the Land of the Soviets?). It is a good Cold War adventure, but it could have been better (by the way, if one wishes to read a graphic novel that deals more realistically with the birth of the Soviet space program, I would recommend Laika by Nick Abadzis). Finally, the album includes at the end some good informative material on how the book was made.
This is another Blake & Mortimer album. Set in the 1950s, this is a cold war storyline with a science-fictional element.While published as the 8th volume, its actually the 14th. Its the first album by the 'second team' doing albums after the death of B&M creator EP Jacobs. Its by Yves Sente & Andre Juillard. Cinebooks will published their 3 other albums next.The Voronov Plot is built on a deadly bacteria which is returned with a russian missle. A plot is hatched that seems to be aimed at western leaders, which B&M are dealing with, when they realize its subterfuge with the real aim to kill off soviet leaders for a take-over. Also we have a subplot of rescuing an agent for the west from the Soviets. And, of course, B&M's enemy Col Orlik is up to his neck in it.A bonus in this album is an afterward section on the assemble of the team for the book and the research that went into creating it.
I like all the books in Blake & Mortimer series, but I find the font is just too small for comfortable reading!
Stepping into the shoes of Edgar P. Jacobs, writer Yves Sante and artist André Juillard valiantly attempt to recapture the magic of Jacobs’ work, and with mostly successful results. Featuring Colonel Olrik (a villain who appears in nearly every Blake and Mortimer book), the plot is focused on Cold War espionage and biological experimentation between the Russians and the Brits. Assassinations and intrigue abound, and Juillard illustrates a solidly clever plot with superb clarity.What is more problematic, though, is the wordiness. Jacobs certainly did not shy away from verbosity, yet Sante seems to be attempting to trump his predecessor in the one part of the work where he should have been restrained. VORONOV PLOT actually contains some pages with more words than illustrations, and when the words fail to be all that clever or interesting, one must wonder why they’re there. If it’s an attempt at replicating Jacobs’ style, I understand that, but times change and a story needs to reflect this. There is a charm to the Blake and Mortimer series that grows the more you read the books. That charm faltered during some segments of this particular episode.With those caveats, I remain absolutely thrilled someone still produces old-fashioned entertainment with such loving care. I think that it is really great that the adventures of Blake & Mortimer is continued in such a convincing style that you can't separate them from the originals - at least it doesn't get any better than this. The story here is very exciting and it really grabs you.Other great and recommendable titles in this newer series are:"The Francis Blake Affair", "The Strange Encounter", "The Oath of the five Lords" (almost a crime story) and others.
